The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has criticized management of the University of Education over the shut down following an injunction from a High court.

According to UTAG, it will not sit unconcerned for any authority or individual to undermine the country’s educational system.

The National President of UTAG, Harry Agbanu Steve Anti speaking on TV3 said they shall fight and protect academic freedom of students in Ghana.

The University is battling a court case brought against it by a former Assemblyman of Donkoryiem, Supi Kofi Kwayera over the continuous stay of the school’s Council.

The Council’s mandatory four year term expired in 2013, but the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government directed it to act until a substantive one is appointed.

The former Education Minister, Professor Naana Opoku Agyemang in her justification cited the protracted election petition in 2013 and some challenges facing the education sector for the central government’s decision.

The development made the former Assemblyman of Donkoryiem, Supi Kofi Kwayera to sue the university.
In line with the decision of the court, Harry Agbanu Steve of UTAG said "The decision at UEW is a national one. For us at UTAG, it is an attack on academic freedom and therefore we are not looking at the issue as only pertaining to UEW. It is a national issue and we are going to confront it as such. We are not going to stay idle by for any authority or individual to trample on the academic freedom. We will use all the venom we have to fight it.

"This is not a threat. We have vowed to ourselves that we will do everything in our power to protect academic freedom of our institutions. We believe that the only institutions that we have that we can be proud of are our educational institutions and if we do anything to undermine them then we are finished as a country."
